Dr. Schaffer’s research interests have encompassed, in part, molecular genetic studies of several primary immunodeficiency diseases, rheumatologic disorders, and autoimmune inner ear disorders. This body of work has been supported by grants from the NIH, academic centers, and industry. These research endeavors resulted in publishing more than 45 articles, abstracts, and book chapters in medical journals and textbooks. In addition, this is also reflected in the number of times Dr. Schaffer has been an invited symposium speaker at both national and international scientific conferences since the 1980’s.

Dr. Schaffer and his wonderful wife Sandy, have three great children and four delightful grandchildren. The Schaffer’s oldest son is a captain in the Air Force and his daughter is an award-winning photographer. Their youngest son is a PhD student in history and is pursuing an academic career. When Dr. Schaffer has time off, he ardently pursues his hobbies of high power rocketry and ham radio.
